South of the River: Three Remarkable Christmas Venues
The Thames used to feel like the border between two countries – those that lived in South London would’ve had trouble getting a cabbie to take them home after a night out in the West End – but times have, of course changed and now hopping back and forth is no problem with a number of the most astonishing things in the city happening South. Regenerations in Southbank, landmark new developments and improving infrastructures are happening down South – and the venue world is contending at the same rate. Here are some of our picks for Christmas 2017.
If it’s a slightly larger setting you need this Christmas, have you considered Electric Brixton? With it’s phenomenal stage and unparalleled sightlines, Electric Brixton can be used for almost anything. The main room has a theatrical structure, with the ground floor and stage overlooked by a mezzanine gallery meaning that despite the size of the venue it has an intimate feel to it. Whilst the venue has been refurbished over the years, original features have been retained for the most part, with modern additions such as glided banquettes, disco ball chandeliers, sleek furniture and contemporary bars to ensure the backdrop is as up to date as it is lavish. Standing, the venue can hold up to 1700, meaning you can bring the whole company along as well as the postman and the window cleaners! If you like the look of the venue but have a slightly smaller crowd, the venue can be used for a seated dinner, in which it hosts 180, or as a theatre for 250 people. Brixton is on the Northern Line, which means despite being a little bit further from most of the action in the West End, your guests will be able to hop on the night tube at any time after the lights go down.
The Cutty Sark is the country’s sole surviving tea clipper and makes for a spectacular setting for any party, be it Christmas, Summer or anything in between. We offer many on the river parties, but The Cutty Sark is docked in beautiful Greenwich and has its own DLR stop just outside (Cutty Sark for Maritime Greenwich.) Weather permitting, the decking above provides beautiful views of Canary Wharf, whilst downstairs you can enjoy The Dry Berth – an area beneath the ship offering the flexibility to design your event any way you see fit.
Just down the river from the Cutty Sark is Printworks, a new and exciting venue now available for event hire. Another one for those with large guestlists, Printworks consists of 15 acres of privately gated land and across all of the rooms can hold 6000 people. Between 1989 and 2013 the venue was used to print The Evening Standard, The Metro and The Daily Mail – however after being reopened it now has an offering of six different event spaces, all with a versatile industrial infrastructure and enough logistical and operational flexibility for any Christmas event.
